On Spiritual Maturity, Inclusivity and Crossroads

(A personal reflection on “Crossroads” – Young Adults Ministry Retreat 2024 by Damien Wong, Pastoral Team Staff)

YAM retreat 2024

This retreat has been deeply spiritual and mature. It captured what Young Adults Ministry (YAM) needs today. In fact, it is a sign of the growth of YAM in general. I’m glad to see how far it has come.

Deep conversations

From the time I first stepped onto the bus on Friday morning till the time I stepped off on Sunday afternoon, I had non-stop conversations that were deep and meaningful. I didn’t have to break any ice. People were so willing to start sharing and asking questions. The atmosphere for this retreat was not so much about chasing a spiritual high but of rich, deep, and fulfilled discovery and reflection. I thank Ps Gilbert for the talks and the great questions and the YAM Retreat committee for facilitating such an atmosphere.

Special needs

As our community grows, we are bound to have people from all walks of life, including those with special needs. We had several YAs with special needs join us at this retreat and I believe they had a great time. I am proud of YAM because as much as it is difficult, this is a place that these friends can feel welcomed and be at home. Before A* came to BRMC, he had gone to many churches but he could never stay. However, he has been attending BRMC for 10 years. I think this is the right way.

Young families

I am also glad that the retreat accommodated parents with young children. This is the first time YAM Retreat has had so many kids around and that the committee actively involved them. As a parent myself, I am so glad that we are helping them to be part of the community, and they are super grateful for this.

Biggest-ever YAM Retreat turnout

The organisers should give yourselves a pat on the back. With almost 200 in attendance, they essentially planned a full church camp. They planned with purpose and direction, allowing the participants to reflect on the Crossroads in their lives. I believe YAM is headed in the right direction.
